Sylvania road department incurs $22,700 in overtime costs

Sylvania Township’s road department has incurred $22,700 in overtime expenses for the winter through Jan. 21, more than five times the amount it spent during the comparable period last year.

Gregory Huffman, the township’s public-works manager, told the township trustees Tuesday that many storms’ weekend or holiday timing has bumped up the already high cost of assigning department employees to alternating 12-hour shifts to tackle ice and snow on the township’s 131 miles of roadway.

As of Tuesday, he said, 44 inches of snow had fallen in the township, eight inches more than an entire normal winter. So far, Mr. Huffman said, crews had spread 1,600 tons of rock salt, with the township’s reserve supply likely to be tapped into soon.
