Dedication set for Sunday on ceramic tiles for Main Street bridge
After the Sylvania Fall Festival on Sunday, the city will formally dedicate the installment of four mosaics on the Main Street bridge in downtown Sylvania.
The dedication will be at 3 p.m. at the Main Street bridge, just south of Monroe Street.
The four ceramic tiles, commissioned by the Sylvania Arts Commission, were completed by artist Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak, 82, of the Sisters of St. Francis at the Lourdes University campus studio. Each mosaic depicts how nature has helped shape the city.
The themes of the four signs, chosen by the city and the arts commission, are River Walk Trail, Tree City, Freedom Road, and Native American Settlement.
River Walk represents Sylvania’s River Trail along Ten Mile Creek, the first phase of which is to officially open June 5. Freedom Road is an allusion to the Lathrop House, where slaves fleeing to Canada were given refuge, and Sylvania’s place in the Underground Railroad. Native American Settlement gives artistic expression to the Indian village that once stood on ground that is in Sylvania. And Tree City speaks to Sylvania’s arboreal name and status as a Tree City USA.
