Description: Local Sylvania area veterans groups, the City of Sylvania and Sylvania Recreation who is assisting with coordination of events announces that the 2013 Sylvania Memorial Day observances will be held on Monday; May 27, 2013. All area citizens are encouraged to come out to honor and respect for Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Beginning at 9:00 AM, a brief service will be held at Toledo Memorial Park, 6832 Monroe St. Over 12,000 local veterans are laid to rest at Toledo Memorial Park. The “Sea of Flags” that decorate their graves is a truly magnificent sight. Local veterans groups and color guards also will also visit Association, Ravine and St. Joseph’s cemeteries to honor those area veterans buried there.

The annual Memorial Day Parade will again start from, St. Joseph’s School, 5411 Main St.beginning at 10:15 AM. The parade will proceed north on Main St. to Erie St. finishing at Veterans Memorial Field. The Northview and Southview High School Bands as well as local veterans, military, scout and civic groups and local political dignitaries will participate in this year’s parade.

A 30-minute Memorial Day service honoring America’s Veterans will begin at 11:00 AM at Veterans Memorial Field with City of Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough serving as master of ceremonies. Five large bronze monuments are in place at Memorial Field describing five American wars and listing the Sylvania area residents who gave up their lives in those conflicts.

Description: Meet new moms and let the kids play at our free summer park playdates. Check the website for each week's location, as it changes to different area playgrounds in Sylvania and the greater Toledo area. All rain days will be held at the Toledo Museum of Art's Family Center.

Description: Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s national signature activity. Relay began in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, by Dr. Gordy Klatt. He ran and walked on a local track for 24 hours, traveling a total of 81 miles and raising $27,000. Since Dr. Klatt’s one-man marathon, more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries have taken up the fight through this global movement and raised more than $4 billion to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Most Relay For Life events last 18 to 24 hours at a school or community field. The events are filled with fun and excitement for all ages. Relay For Life begins with a Cancer Survivors Lap celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer. Later in the evening, the Luminaria Ceremony remembers those who have experienced cancer. Games, music, live entertainment and pep rallies encourage people all through the night. Teams are made up of eight to 15 people. During the event, at least one member of each team is walking or running the track at all times.
