Lourdes men's volleyball beats Saint Xavier

CHICAGO --- Lourdes University’s men’s volleyball team bounced back from a five-set loss on Friday by defeating Saint Xavier 25-21,19-25, 25-18, 25-21 on Saturday at the Shannon Center. to remain in second place in the Great Lakes Conference standings.

An early 5-1 run by the Gray Wolves in the opening set put Lourdes on top 7-3, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the set. The lead remained between two and four most of the set as the Gray Wolves hit .379 with just three errors in the stanza.

Saint Xavier evened the match with a win in set two as the Cougars hit .375 themselves. The set was tied at 14 when the Cougars scored the next three points, and never trailed the rest of the way.

Lourdes bounced back in the third, scoring seven of the final nine points to pull away after leading just 18-16. The Gray Wolves held the Cougars to just .067 hitting in the frame.

The Gray Wolves then forced Saint Xavier to hit -.033 in the final set with only four kills. However, despite putting down 17 kills themselves, Lourdes committed 10 attack errors to keep the Cougars in the set. The Gray Wolves trailed 6-0 right away, and was down 14-6 before going on an 8-2 run to close within two. Lourdes tied the set at 17, and it was still tied at 21 before the Gray Wolves tallied the final four points, closing the match on a kill from Jo’Lon Clark.

Clark led Lourdes with 15 kills while Garrett Jones tallied 13 more. Jones hit a team-leading .391 for the night. Frank Craig registered 12 kills while Steve Barcus handed out 34 assists.

Brad Miller led the defense with 10 digs while Jones tallied a team-high eight blocks. Lourdes outblocked the Cougars 13-11 and outdug the hosts 43-35 for the night.

J.T. O’Connell led Saint Xavier (3-12, 3-4 GLC) with 12 kills while Sam Kull added 10 more for the Cougars.

Lourdes (11-4, 6-2) will travel Monday to Belleville, Ill., to face Lindenwood-Belleville at 8 p.m. EDT at Lynx Arena.
