Pool day set for dogs at Plummer

Sylvania’s Plummer Pool will be going to the dogs on Sept. 9.

From 1 to 4 p.m., Sylvania Recreation and SylvaniaVet are sponsoring the first annual “Jack’s Pooch Plunge.” Dog’s will have the opportunity to go swimming when accompanied by a responsible adult. The pool is at 6940 Maplewood, near downtown Sylvania.

The pooch plunge is an event fostered by Sylvania Recreation board member Dave Spiess. His father, Jack, after whom the event is named, passed away in June, 2011. Jack Spiess was a huge animal lover and his son wanted to honor his memory. Dave Spiess said he is familiar with other municipalities which have made pools available to dogs after the close of the summer swim season.

He has become involved in Toledo Unleashed, an organization that wants a Bark Park for the Toledo area. “I saw this as an opportunity to raise funds to help in making a dog park in our community a reality,” he said.

The Plummer Pool event has a fee of $5 per dog. Mr. Spiess said tennis balls and other water toys will be available for the dogs, and he will provide paddle lessons to people or dogs that day.

The pool has a sloped entry.
