Batter up. Sylvania’s own vintage base ball team, the Great Black Swamp Frogs competed for the Sylvania Cup.
In its 24th season, the team hosted a tournament at Pacesetter Park on Saturday. It invited two other teams for a little ball, played Civil War-era style. Canal Fulton Mules and Walker Wheels of Brooklyn, Mich. took part in the matches.

The base ball teams play ball according to the rules and customs of 1860s. The athletes seemingly play just like modern baseball with nine innings, nine fielders, and three outs. But teammates wear apparel matching the era, catch the ball bare handed, pitchers toss the ball underhanded, and there are no walks or strikeouts.
The Sylvania team’s next game in the area is planned for 1 p.m. July 4 against the Woodstock Actives of Woodstock, Ont., at Wildwood Metropark, 5100 W. Central Ave., Sylvania Township. For the team‘s schedule, visit www.sev.org/GBSFrogs.
