It wasn't for the squeamish, and it definitely wasn't pretty, but a pizza eating contest Monday night kicked off the week of spirited activities before the Southview Cougars take on the Northview Wildcats on the football field Friday.

Northview won the pizza eating contest, in which 20 football players from each team squared off to see who could eat the most in five minutes. Northview ate 120 slices compared to Southview's 110.

The winning school is to receive 75 percent of the proceeds of sales from Jet's Pizza on Monday, plus bragging rights for the first-ever such competition. Southview is to receive 25 percent of the proceeds.

The event was coordinated by the athletic directors of both Sylvania high schools, Susie Felver of Southview and Chris Irwin of Northview. It was held at and outside Jet's Pizza at 4900 N. McCord Rd.

The schools have a series of spirited activities this week leading up to the big game. At 7 p.m. Tuesday is the annual powderpuff game between girls at both schools on the field, and with a bonfire nearby. On Wednesday is a dodgeball tournament between students at both schools.
