Sylvania’s local traveling baseball team, the Mavericks, played this weekend in its annual invitation tournament, taking on teams from Ohio and Michigan.

For more than 20 years, the Sylvania Recreation District has hosted the Mavericks Baseball Fourth of July Tournament. This year, about 40 traveling teams came to Sylvania to play ball at the diamonds at Pacesetter Park, 8801 Sylvania-Metamora Rd.; at Northview, 5403 Silica Dr.; and at Southview, 7225 Sylvania Ave. The tournament started at 6 p.m. Friday and ends with the championship games on Sunday.

The leagues are based on two age groups of 9 and 14.

The tournament began with a pool play, and then each group will be slotted into single-elimination brackets, ending with the championship games on Sunday.

Each team will play at least three games, said Ken Katafias, operations manager at the recreation district.

The championship games will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pacesetter Park for those in the 9 and under age group and the 14-year-old group will have its final game at 3 p.m. at Northview. The winning teams will receive trophies.
