A Perrysburg contractor has been hired to be begin this week construction of a practice football field at Northview High School in Sylvania.
The Sylvania Board of Education voted on Monday to hire D&K Excavating for $137,000, or $63,000 lower than what was budgeted. Six bids were received for the work, with the highest topping $216,000. The work, on property recently purchased next to the Northview's rear parking lot and near the existing football field, will be funded from proceeds of school-owned land on King Road that was sold last year.
The project is the first of many in a long-term plan for an $11 million overhaul of athletic fields at Northview and Southview high schools.
Alan Bacho, director of facilities and operations for the school district, told school board members that sufficient topsoil and drainage at the site contributed to a lower bid. He added $4,000 for irrigation of a parcel not in the original plans.
He and Kurt Miller, president of Miller Diversified, reviewed the construction plans and are "confident” D&K Excavating can complete the work for the bid amount. Miller Diversified, of Maumee, is acting as construction consultant to the district on the project.
Mr. Bach said unrelated work on Sylvania Avenue meant bringing equipment and trucking turf for the new field made his costs lower for this project.
The practice field will be 210 feet by 225 feet on the property adjacent to the Northview parking lot on Silica Drive where two houses are in the process of being torn down. The first, at 5365 Silica, was demolished last week. The home at 5365 Silicia is expected to be demolished within days. The district purchased the homes for $470,000 in December to provide room for the expanded facilities.
The scheduled construction includes planting grass between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15, considered an optimal time of year for such work, Mr. Bacho said. If the weather does not cooperate, but the contractor will be responsible to make sure the grass is growing in the spring.
The completion date is July, 2014. Part of the practice field project is installing more parking spaces, but that component is on hold until more private funding is raised.
The majority of funding for the athletic field upgrade project, which includes a new softball field at Northview and a football stadium at Southview, is being secured through the parent-run Athletic Foundation. Projects are expected to be completed as money is contributed.
