The Sylvania School District is preparing two homes on Silica Drive for demolition this week to make room for the proposed new althletic practice field for the next door Northview High School.
On Thursday, Recycle Services of Toledo had workers combing the houses at 5363 Silica and 5365 Silica for salvageable items before the structures are demolished.
In December, the district purchased the two homes -- one for for $201,000 and the other for $269,000 -- to have room to build a football practice field and to add 35 more parking spaces to the high school's lot.
These additions are part of a master plan for athletic facility upgrades at Northview and Southview high schools, costing an estimated $11 million and to take place over several years, as money becomes available. The district plans to pay for it with private funds. There is no date set for when the upgrades will begin.
Recycling Services is tearing down the homes at no charge, Sylvania Schools spokesman Nancy Crandell said. The demolition will take place once the salvaging portion of the work is complete, and could happen yet this week, she said.
