A new principal for Central Trail Elementary and a new Sylvania Schools transportation director have been hired by the Sylvania Board of Education.
Angela Schaal, formerly with Maumee City Schools, will replace Toni Gerber as principal of Central Trail. John Dell was hired as the transportation director, coming from Fostoria City Schools and replacing interim transportation director, Ann Liggett, who had stepped in following the retirement of Joe Kahl this year.
The school board on Monday approved a 2-year contract for Ms. Schaal for $91,294 salary a year. Mr. Dell was given a two-year contract for $80,981 a year.
At Central Trail, Ms. Gerber is retiring, after 29 years with the Sylvania Schools and had been the principal at the former Central Elementary and the new Central Trail since 1989.
Ms. Schaal has been the principal at Fort Miami school since 2010. She was with the Airport Community Schools in Carleton, Mich. from 2007 to 2010.
Ms. Schaal started her teaching career in 2000 in the Oregon City Schools, teaching first grade. Then she was a field instruction for Michigan State University in 2005, a research assistant from 2005 to 2007, and was a literacy and language arts teacher in the university’s College of Teacher Education from 2005 to 2007.
Ms. Schaal is a member of several state and national committees, including the International Reading Association, Reading Recovery Council of North America, and the National Network of Partnership Schools . She is also a certified trainer with the National Network of Partnership Schools, Ohio Teacher Evaluation System, and ALICE (Response Options Safety Program).
She received her bachelor of education from the University of Toledo in 1999, and received a masters of education in 2003 and a specialist of education in 2003 from Bowling Green State University. She is working on her doctorate in philosophy in language, literacy and curriculum from Michigan State.
For the Sylvania Schools transportation post, Mr. Dell had been the transportation supervisor for Fostoria Schools since 2009. He was a bus driver for Tiffin and Hopewell-Louden Schools from 2000 to 2005, and prior to that was a police officer with the Tiffin Police Department, from 1992 to 2005 and was a dispatcher/911 operator from 2006 to 2009.
Mr. Dell served as a military police officer with the United States Army, serving in the Persian Gulf War. He received an associate of applied science in criminal justice from Terra Community College in 2000, graduating cum laude.
