Nerves and confidence filled the air as more than 1,000 high school students today participated in the Sylvania Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament.
The event, which runs through Saturday, takes place at Northview and Southview high schools as well as at McCord Junior High. It is for high school students from around Ohio.
The competition began after the school day ended. Winners have the opportunity to earn points, which will guarantee placement in the state competition. The state competition this year will be in Youngstown, from Feb. 19 to March 2.
Last year, Northview's team was named to the 100 Club by the National Forensic League, which is an award given to only the teams that are in the top 10 percent of speech and debate clubs nationwide. Four Sylvania district students also made it to the speech and debate national competition in 2012.
Joseph Drouillard, Griffen Browning and David Zavc coach the Northview team, and Alex Clarkson and Paul Moffit coach the Southview team. For more information, visit www.sylvaniaschools.org.
