The Sylvania-Metamora and Mitchaw Road intersection in Sylvania Township will be closed beginning Monday because of the construction of a roundabout.

Geddis Paving of Toledo, the contractor, is expected to be done in about 45 days.

During the road closure, motorists will be rerouted using Kilburn Road to Brint Road, or Centennial Road to Brint Road to Mitchaw or Kilburn.

Lucas County engineers said a roundabout will handle the increased traffic at the intersection. Now, the intersection requires northbound and southbound motorists on Mitchaw to stop at a stop sign and Sylvania-Metamora has through traffic in both directions. Roundabouts do not require motorists to stop, but approaching traffic needs to yield to motorists already in the traffic circle.

The project’s estimated cost is $1,045,000.

The Ohio Department of Transportation Federal High Risk Rural Safety Funds will provide $588,500 for the work. The Ohio Public Works Commission will provide a grant of $300,000. Storm Water Utility District funds and the county engineer’s Capital Project Program will pay for the rest.

The county is constructing a roundabout not too far away at King and Brint Roads. The intersection, which borders Sylvania and Sylvania Township, was closed in mid-June and also has 45-day project schedule.
