After about 12 years of choosing the same firework manufacturer, the City of Sylvania will go a new route.

The City Council hired Zambelli Fireworks to put on the annual firework display at the city's and Sylvania Township’s Independence Day celebration on July 3 at Centennial Terrace.

Councilman Mike Brown said selecting Zambelli over Pyrotecnico, both of New Castle, Penn., was a matter of quantity for the price. Both contractors quoted $28,875, "down to the penny," Mr. Brown said at Tuesday's council meeting.

But Zambelli promised about 2,234 in additional “explosions” or fireworks. Officials said they contracted with the Zambelli before Pyrotecnico was chosen for the last dozen years or so.

It was unanimously approved by council. The performance, with a July 4 rain date, will include a choreographed show to music.

As usual, Coca-Cola will sponsor the event, contributing about $5,000 this year as last year. The city and township will seek other sponsors.

Last year, sponsors contributed about $10,000 toward the show's cost of $28,875. The city and township split the remainder.
