Construction crews this week removed trees and shrubs to prepare the grounds for a roundabout at the King and Brint Road intersection.

Crews began “clearing and grubbing,” cutting down trees and removing shrubbery to make room for the relocation of utility lines required before the road construction project begins, said Ron Myers, traffic engineer for the Lucas County Engineers who are leading the roundabout project.

Currently the busy flow of traffic at the intersection is managed by four stop signs. In the works since 2010, the roundabout is supposed to make the traffic flow smoother, given the growth of homes and other businesses in the area. With the three of the four corners in the city of Sylvania, and one located in Sylvania Township, the project is a joint effort between the two entities and Lucas County.

Geddis Paving and Excavating, of Toledo, will begin construction of the roundabout in June, and the intersection will be shut for 45 days, Mr. Myers said. The work should be completed before the new school year begins in August.

The estimated project cost is $1.1 million, including design, construction, inspection, and right of way acquisition expenses. According to an agreement between the entities involved, the cost will be divided with the city paying 7.25 percent, the township 0.9 percent, and the county 1.85 percent. The majority of the cost will be covered by two grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission and federal transportation funding, Mr. Myers said.

Each group's cost will be finalized once the project is complete, he said.

This is the fourth roundabout the county will construct in the Sylvania area. A roundabout at the Sylvania-Metamora and Mitchaw Road intersection is planned for the summer. Two are already located at Mitchaw and Brint Road and at Sylvania Avenue and Mitchaw.
