Sylvania Township Fire Department launches Facebook page

This month, the Sylvania Township Fire Department's Facebook page went live as a platform for residents to receive a behind-the-scenes look at the department as well as safety information.

The department, which serves Sylvania city and Sylvania Township, wanted the Web site to have interactive contact with residents.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Froelich, the main administrator for the newly minted site, said he started planning the site in September.

“I began talking to someone in the department who is good with computers (about the idea) and asked him if he could set it up." he said. "The next day he called me and it was done.

He consulted with the department heads and the township Board of Trustees on site guidelines and use.

Residents can find information on the site regarding emergency road closures, as well as education information on avoiding fire and other disasters.

“If there is a major incident, such as a road closure, we will post the emergency information on the page,” he said, adding that the department's two administrative assistants have access to post in emergency incidents while he is tending to the incident in the field.

Initial posts show pictures of the department battling a house fire in sub-zero temperatures. There's also tips on carbon monoxide safety.

Mr. Froelich is organizing upcoming articles on the site on topics such as what the department requires to be a firefighter, a day in the life of a firefighter, and what the job entails.

Lt. Chad Morris, the department's community outreach coordinator, plans to use the site for educational articles and for community events posts, Mr. Froelich said.
