The Sylvania Zoning and Annexation Committee continues its review over the proper storage requirements for recreational vehicles at home.
At issue is whether RVs are kept in places that obstruct views or are considered an eyesore to neighbors.
Among the suggested changes in the city zoning law which regulates the storage of RVs on residential properties is to impose a 20-foot limit on the length of vehicles to be stored at home or tighter storage rules would apply to longer vehicles. The city administration is trying to deermine what those rules might be.
One approach was to allow the city Zoning Board of Appeals to determine exceptions to a new code, in which case a variance could be granted. Such an approach would allow the zoning committee to revise the code with set regulations and establish a process for variances.
But city Service Director Kevin Aller said that approach would make it hard to determine when variances should be granted.
“The administration’s concern with the appeals process is that review should have some criteria established. It isn’t fair or advisable to have a four or five-person panel say, ‘I like blue or I like red,’ ” he said.
Originally recommended was a 5-foot setback from the property line and 3-foot setback on a side yard. The biggest concern regarded RVs parked in a home's side yard.
