Charles Quick popped into the Sylvania Senior Center for a tax session with a tax aide.

"It's close and I came here because people recommended they help me with my sister's taxes. So far, I'm satisfied," he said.

A resident of Temperance, across the line in Michigan, Mr. Quick was able to get free tax filing assistance at the center.

From now until April 15, the AARP is offering free tax filing assistance through its tax-aide program. About eight tax preparers and the site leader, Barbara Sutherlin, set up shop at the senior center every Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling the center.

. Although the program, in its 16th year, is primarily for seniors, anyone can make an appointment to sit down with a tax specialist.

"We do encourage seniors to come in, because they do need help going through pensions and funds, and sometimes they are unaware that they do not need to file," she said. "Some are frightened that they may need to file but they have had nothing withheld. We have the limits that shows if they need to file. So some have us look at their papers and we will write on their taxes no need to file."

Contact the Sylvania Senior Center at 419-885-3913 to schedule an appointment.
