Sylvania officials are considering the annexation into the city from Sylvania Township of some residential properties on Arbor Way.

The annexation proposal was discussed Tuesday night by city officials, including councilmen who are members of the zoning and annexation committee.

“We are working on a proposed annexation of some residential properties on Arbor Way, to come into the city,” city law director Jim Moan said. He said there are many reasons and advantages for residents if the change goes through. The residents seeking annexation would have better pricing for sanitary sewers.

The proposed annexation was initiated by some of the property owners near Arbor Way, which off of Whiteford Road near Arbor Hills Junior High but is part of the township.

“Property owners have been working for six months or longer to want to come into the city,” Mr. Moan said. “We've have a policy welcoming folks that choose to move...”

But he said annexing the property owners into the city wouldn't change economic conditions drastically.

“This is not going to generate new jobs to our community. The cost to the city is the cost of maintaining that roadway,” Mr. Moan said. “We'll end up with more sewer customers.”

He said that the change would also require the city to invest an estimated $250,000 for more sanitary sewers. The proposal includes an area that protrudes from the city of Sylvania east, toward Whiteford Road, Mr. Moan said.

“Under the new annexation requirements and laws, the city has to agree to take on a major portion of roads. We may not want to go actually all the way to Whiteford.”

But while the issue is still under discussion, he said the annexation would largely help the residents.

“I think overall, it's a benefit,” he said.

The annexation matter is in the preliminary stages and is to be discussed during council's Dec. 17 council meeting.
