Sylvania resident Nada Salem says it is difficult to fight or argue when surrounded by good music, art, and food.

She and her husband, Nadeem, organized the inaugural “We’ve Got Talent,” a celebration of the many different countries under the Arab culture and their gifts in art, music, and food. The event was held today in the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University in Sylvania.

“I’m from Lebanon, and there are a lot of struggles in the Middle East,” said Mrs. Salem, who is a sculptor and painter. “Although we come from the same culture, the politics overseas affects people, too. So what better way to gather people together, no matter what the religion or political affiliation?”

The gathering hosted by the Network of Arab-American Professionals Toledo Chapter, which her husband recently formed, invited all of Arab and non-Arab descent to showcase their crafts, from jewelry, pottery, and painting to music and makeup making. More than 28 vendors took part with artists having ethnic roots in Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan.

The Arab cuisine was also highlighted by local restaurants. Children with musical talent also played piano, guitar, or sang during the event.

Mrs. Salem said the goal is to make the event a yearly gathering.
