Star gazing, vintage base ball, fishing highlight Sylvania area weekend

This weekend, Sylvania area residents can gaze at the sparkling night sky, take in the vintage baseball tournament, and take dad fishing for free. 

FRIDAY
Preschoolers enjoy a day of fun, stories, and puppets at the Sylvania Branch Toledo Public Library. “For Me, For You, For Later” Fun Fair features local puppeteer Joyce Davis, activity stations, crafts, and a special story time. Children will learn money smarts based on saving, spending, and sharing, and will receive a free financial education kit and a Sesame Street DVD. Ages 2 to 5 are invited to the free event, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Sylvania Meeting Room, Sylvania Branch Library, 6749 Monroe St. For information, visit www.toledolibrary.org.

"Weird Al” Yankovic, the king of song parodies, returns to Toledo, after two years. The platinum-record winning artist, whose wacky videos mocked pop legends like Michael Jackson and Madonna in the 1980s, will perform in Sylvania. The show, which will feature hits off his 2011 album “Alpocalypse,” begins at 8 p.m., Centennial Terrace, 5773 Centennial Rd. Sylvania stargazers get your telescopes out, the Toledo Astronomical Association sets up its telescopes to view the wonders of Sylvania’s night sky. The star spotting starts at 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sylvan Prairie Park, 8601 Brint Rd. For information, visit www.olanderpark.com.

 

SATURDAY
Wildwood Park hosts the annual Happy Trails 5K. The BCSN Fit One Mile Walk, hosted by Muddy and Muddonna of the Toledo Mud Hens, will coincide with the park’s fund-raising run/walk. Proceeds will go towards the park's trail construction and maintenance. Online registration is now closed. Reserve a spot and pick up a packet from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Dave's Running Shop, 5700 Monroe St., Sylvania. Race day registration and packet pick-up will be from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wildwood Visitors Center in Sylvania Township. Sylvania’s vintage baseball team, the Great Black Swamp Frogs Base Ball Club, gears up for a triple-header tournament. The layers in the Sylvania Cup Vintage Base Ball Tournament will abide by the rules of 1860 ball. The first match is at 10 a.m. vs. the Spiegel Grove Squires, followed by a game at noon against the Monitors BBC, then a game at 2 p.m. against Wyandotte Ghostriders. SUNDAY
Fathers enjoy a weekend of free events at Olander Park. On Father’s Day, the park has an evening of nighttime fishing, with free bait and a rowboat for dad from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Olander Park, 6930 Sylvania Ave. For information, visit www.olanderpark.com.
