This weekend, Sylvania honors war heroes with the annual Memorial Day Parade, and there a a flower show for home gardening ideas.
It's National Poppy Day, and the local Miss Poppy, Natalie Wuwert, will be distributing the remembrance flower on behalf of the American Legion Joseph W. Diehn Post 468. The symbolic poppy is worn in remembrance of war veterans. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Miss Poppy will be at Barry’s Bagel, 4024 N. Holland-Sylvania Rd., distributing the free flower that is often worn on Memorial Day. However, donations are accepted and go towards helping veterans and their families in need. Pack a picnic, it’s time for Nature Nurturing Up Close and Personal at Fossil Park where 3- to 5-year-old children are invited for outdoor adventures, a close look at fauna, and fun. View lush gardens that can provide ideas for your home. The Anthony Wayne Garden Club Flower Show will be hosted at Wildwood Metropark in Sylvania Township for three days. The bi-annual show will have on view flower show entries in the living room and solarium. From 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the indoor and outdoor garden show is free, and starts at the Manor House, Wildwood Preserve Metropark, 5100 W. Explore the floodplain at Harroun Community Park. Cross Over the Bridge will give nature lovers an educational hike of the floodplain, through the Sylvania River Trail, while viewing the seasonal colors and flowers of spring. Thousands of Sylvania residents will line the streets and wave the American Flag to show their support and honor for those men and women who have died while serving in the United States military. The commemorative Memorial Day Parade and Services begin at 9 a.m., with a brief service held at Toledo Memorial Park, 6382 Monroe St. The annual Memorial Day parade will start at 10:15 am. at St. Joseph’s School, 5411 Main St. The parade will proceed north on Main Street to Erie Street and finish at Veterans Memorial Field in Memorial Park.
