Mardi Gras, planetarium to tea highlight weekend events

From Mardi Gras to exploring the universe, there's a host of weekend events in the Sylvania area. 

SATURDAY

McCord Road Christian Church is the place for the family-based festival that will include Tom Toombs, a youth minister who uses performing arts to reach young children. The day will also include games, prizes a cake walk and face painting. The event is noon to 4 p.m., and free, at the church, 4765 McCord Rd.

Help those affected by spinal cord injuries by attending the Team Bigelow Mardi Gras Gala at St. Joseph School in Sylvania. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Great Lakes Spinal Cord Injury Fund. A silent auction and the Aaron Stark Band are highlights of the night. The event is at the school's Father Wurzel Family Center, which is on Ravine Drive just east of Main Street, from 6:30 p.m.-11 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person. For information, 419-297-2906.

Popular demand has brought back the film BIG, a zany exploration into the universe, at Appold Planetarium at Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd. Admission is $4 for children and $5 for adults. Reservations are recommended at 419-517-8897 or email planetarium@lourdes.edu.

Sweet Shalom Tea Room pairs tea and foods from Greece for the last night of its event “Tea In Greece. Sweet Shalom Tea Room, 8216 Erie St. Seatings are at noon and 3:30 p.m. Cost is $21.95 per person, by reservation only. Call Sara Velasquez at 419-297-9919.
