Idol, island party on tap for Sylvania weekend

From chances to hear Sylvania residents sing their hearts out for a shot at being called the “Sylvania Idol,” to the opportunity to dress up in paradise island attire for a fund-raiser, there are plenty of opportunities this weekend in the city to listen to music and dance.

Here’s what’s going on this weekend:

Friday:

Sylvania’s Rockin’ BBQ at Haymarket Square, 5758 North Main St., will feature “Sylvania Idol” at 7 p.m. As an event orchestrated by the Downtown Sylvania Association, the event will also have live music from The Travelers. The party begins at 4 p.m. and is scheduled to end at 11 p.m. Tickets will be available at the event for beer, wine, and assorted food items. Admission is $5 per person. The event is for 18 and over, or minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Sylvania Schools will host “A Night in Paradise” fund-raiser, to benefit the athletic foundation. Attendees are asked to dress in their favorite paradise island attire. The evening will feature music and food and tickets are $10 per person (must be 21 years of age). The party starts at 6 p.m. at Centennial Terrace, 5773 Centennial Road. Music will be provided by the Paradise Island Band. Reserved tables are also available for $200. To reserve a table, call 419-824-8656.

Saturday:

Granny’s Attic Sale at the Sylvania Senior Center will start at 9 a.m. Various merchandise, from fabric, furniture, clothing, toys, puzzles and more, will be available for sale until 3 p.m. The Sylvania Senior Center is located at 7140 Sylvania Ave. For more information about the sale, call 419-885-3913.

Foxtrot, waltz and swing to the music of the Johnny Knorr Orchestra at Centennial Terrace, 5773 Centennial Road. The band will start playing at 7:30 p.m., with a free dance lesson offered at 7 p.m. For more information about the band, visit www.johnnyknorr.com.
