Edith Colbeck was surrounded by family, friends, and the staff at West Park Place retirement home to celebrate her centennial birthday Tuesday.

Born on July 10, 1912 in Pennsylvania, she worked as a secretary for a local chemical company. It was through that position that she met her husband, Samuel Colbeck. Her birthday gained another special meaning when she and Mr. Colbeck married on July 10, 1937.

She moved to Toledo from Florida seven years ago, to live closer to her sister, Olive Hull, 96, who also lives at West Park Place.

Ms. Colbeck’s daughter, Judy Roberts, said her mother enjoys outdoor activities and is an avid singer.

“When she and my dad lived in Florida, they did lawn bowling and she sang in a choir. Singing has always been an interest,” said Ms. Roberts, who lives in State College, Pa.

Escorted by a grandson into a dining hall for the party, Ms. Colbeck was presented with a chocolate frosted cake with pink icing and roses. Local entertainment artist Kerry Clark sang hits like “You Are My Sunshine,” “God Bless America” and “Edelweiss,” for the audience, while dessert was served throughout the hall. Ms. Colbeck sat between her two sisters during the party.

Kirsten Pickle, executive director of West Park Place, acknowledged the three women during the ceremony.

“Your family members are very lucky,” she said. “Look at these ladies — you’ve got great genes. We love you very much.”

Ms. Colbeck was presented with a certificate of recognition for reaching the 100-year milestone.

Program director Carol Nadaud said having Ms. Colbeck around is an inspiration. She said it is amazing that the woman is 100 years and and that “she’s very clear minded.” Ms. Colbeck is currently West Park Place’s oldest resident.

Ms. Nadaud used to take Ms. Colbeck and Ms. Hull to Wildwood Park for walking outings, and said both were great and that walking may have helped contribute to such good health and longevity.

During the celebration, when Mr. Clark asked Edith if she has stayed in Toledo for the past seven years because it’s “her kind of town,” she replied, “That’s right!”
