St. Francis Veterinary Hospital has plans to construct a new hospital on Alexis Road in Sylvania.

Owner Dr. John Dillon said the new facility will be built about a block away from its current location at 5544 Alexis Rd.

The new single-story building will be about 5,000 square feet. It will be constructed on a half-acre of empty land next to a Sunoco gas station at the corner or Rudyard and Alexis.

Dr. Dillon told the city Board of Architectural Review members during a building review this month that the veterinary hospital has been at its location at the corner of Alexis and Elliot Drive since 1998.

The submitted plans show the project costing $875,000. City board members gave a tentative approval for the building because two members were absent and one had a conflict of interest. The five-member panel is expected to give final approval at its Sept. 10 meeting.

Dr. Dillon and Dr. Brent Couts care for small animals, including dogs and cats, as well as farm animals, from horses to pigs. The hospital specializes in vaccines, internal medicine, and orthopedics, including knee and bone surgery. They use laser therapy have a laboratory.
