The men representing the Gordon Food Service team at this year’s Sylvania Chamber Golfers competition, came back to keep up their golf game and three-year winning streak.
“This is crazy competitive,” said Victor Wawrzyniak. “We want that belt,” he joked on the pristine greens where the four golfers started their first swings of the day.
He and fellow teammate Kevin Kreiner were part of the team that won the outing last year. The day-long golf tournament, hosted by the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce, has been a Sylvania tradition for about 60 years.
The two, along with Jeff Weills and Matt Frahn, promptly began the match at 12:30 p.m. on the par-three fifth hole at Highland Meadows Golf Club.
“We love playing out here on this course,” said Mr. Kreiner. Each team comprised of four people, men and women, started at different holes around the course. In addition to winning prizes for first, second and third place, participants were awarded prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, and a Ford Fiesta for a hole-in-one on hole No. 5.
The weather had a touch of mugginess, but was bight, sunny and cloudless. The outing, originally scheduled for June 10 when it rained, was moved to Monday.
About 120 people lined up two-by-two in their golf carts waiting for the competition to begin, after taking practice swings on in the putting area and enjoying a catered lunch.
The event is held for friends of the Chamber of Commerce to enjoy a day and evening at Sylvania’s premiere golf courses, Highland or the Sylvania Country Club, said Pat Nowak, chamber executive director.
Awards and a dinner took place after the 18-hole competition was completed.
