Bids for a new tenant at Maplewood Marketplace put on hold

Bids for revitalizing the Maplewood Marketplace building in downtown Sylvania are still on hold.

Mayor Craig Stough told the city council this week that plans to award a contract to repair the building was pulled from the council agenda because of "bumps in the road." He declined to explain.

Maplewood Marketplace, which houses a number of businesses, including Treo Restaurant, is at Maplewood Avenue and Main Street.

Bids for the repair project were solicited and due on Dec. 12. The council was told there were 14 bids.

Council officials said in November that a new business tenant was interested in the property. At that time, Mayor Stough said that an “office type” business could bring in $1 million annually in revenues into the city. He said  repairs would need to be made to the Marketplace to reel in the prospective tenant.

The council's finance and building grounds subcommittee estimated the improvements would cost about 500,000, and the city clerk advertised this amount during the bidding process.

Council is expected to meet again in January to discuss the issue.
